I noticed that the forum had been spammed this morning, well done Peter for sorting it. However, this was an obvious spamming with an obvious heading so why did 9 members post on top of it? Come on folks, use your common sense, leave it to Peter and leave the post alone.

Thanks Nick
I have asked members in the past not to respond to spam....it's a waste of everyone's time!
Whenever we spot it we'll remove it and suspend the posters as soon as we can.

The site has been spammed again, please don't post over it no ,matter how annoying it may be, let Peter and the team deal with it.

Nick this is the only forum I have come across that gets spammed. As you moderate on some others...do they get spammed?

I don't know how this forum membership works John, but it seems that once you register you're allowed to post, it seems the admins don't have full control over the system. However, on the IPMS forum the registration is not automatic and new members have to wait to be approved, I simply Google the email address and the ISP and if I don't find a problem the member is approved, any prospective members I feel are slightly iffy, I simply delay approving the membership. This brings in the human aspect and I don't know if Peter would want to be involved in that? I know Steve on the 1/24th forum does the same thing. Ocassionally a rogue gets through but it's rare. I have to agree though, this forum gets it's fair share of idiots slipping through and it's annoying. It's not Peter's fault though, simply something the admins have to sort out, but posting over the spam doesn't help, however annoying it may be.

I also run a couple of forums and behind the scenes you have a number of options to administer things. Usually in the form of tick boxes, eg "Allow members to use signature yes(tick)/no(no tick)" etc.

If you simply allow people to register and post then you get spammed to death cos its all automatic and they can register lots at a time. I employ a 'captcha' which weeds out quite a few of them but still a number get through Brick wall

So like Nick I had to employ registrations being approved which is a pain but I get an email every time someone registers and I can usually tell by the username that its a spammer. 99% of them are random names that don't resemble anything in English. As long as thats the case I just ignore them until I get one that might be a real person (sometimes it is, and sometimes the spammers get lucky) so I then go into admin mode and check through the names awaiting registration same way as Nick, check the IP addresses, once I've dealt with any real folk, the rest get bulk removed. It takes me a few minutes every few days, but I ain't had a spammer actually post for quite some time now.

My only minor worry is that someone real will register with a really silly name and get removed lol Dancing

Silly names don't bother me as I check every request for membership, however I'm very wary of registrations from France and have had two bad experiences from French ISP's, but every request for membership is scrutinized. The IPMS forum has had two serious attacks recently, one of them at the same time as this forum was seriously spammed, but the firewall and security precautions held firm.
